And honestly, what you wear matters more than people think.
Not because your photos need to look “perfect,” but because the right outfits help you feel confident, relaxed, and like yourselves. As a Minneapolis Engagement Photographer, I’ve photographed couples all over the Twin Cities in every kind of environment imaginable — downtown rooftops, cozy coffee shops, lakeside sunsets, snowy Saint Paul streets, the North Loop, the Stone Arch Bridge, and hidden little spots around Minnesota that feel straight out of a movie.
The couples whose photos feel the most natural usually aren’t the couples wearing the trendiest clothes. They’re the couples wearing outfits that feel elevated but still feel like them.
The sweet spot is usually somewhere between everyday casual and wedding guest formal. You want your photos to feel timeless and intentional without feeling like you’re wearing a costume. For guys, fitted neutral clothing, textured layers, earth tones, clean sneakers or boots, sweaters, jackets, and wool coats tend to photograph really well. For women, movement is everything. Dresses that flow beautifully in motion, layered textures, and outfits that feel fitted but comfortable almost always create the most timeless images. Longer dresses also tend to photograph more elegantly than super short styles.
The biggest thing is wearing something you can actually move around in comfortably. I’m constantly directing movement during sessions — walking, spinning, running, leaning into each other, grabbing coffee together, sitting on stairs, laughing while you move through the city. Your engagement session should feel alive, not stiff.
Neutral colors almost always photograph better than loud or overly trendy choices. My favorite tones for engagement photos are cream, tan, black, olive, rust, and muted blues. As a Minneapolis Wedding Photographer, I usually encourage couples to avoid neon colors, giant logos, overly busy patterns, or clothing with a lot of text and graphics. Simple almost always photographs better because it keeps the focus on emotion and connection instead of the outfit itself.
Your outfits should also complement the location you choose. If we’re photographing around the Stone Arch Bridge, North Loop, downtown Minneapolis, Cathedral Hill, the Walker Art Center, or the Capitol steps, a more editorial and elevated look works incredibly well. If we’re doing a lakeside session, open fields, a park, or somewhere with softer natural scenery, earth tones and relaxed textures tend to feel more natural and cinematic. I always help couples plan this beforehand because the best engagement sessions feel cohesive from beginning to end.
I also almost always recommend bringing two outfits. One slightly dressier look and one more relaxed look gives your gallery variety and helps the session feel more dynamic. A really great engagement session should feel like multiple little stories unfolding throughout the evening rather than one repeated look.
One thing couples often overthink is matching. You absolutely do not need to wear the exact same colors. In fact, it usually photographs better when outfits complement each other instead of matching perfectly. Coordinating tones, mixing textures, layering pieces, and creating contrast tends to look much more natural. Cream with olive, black with camel, denim with neutral knitwear — combinations like that photograph beautifully without looking forced.
The photos couples end up loving most are usually the in-between moments. Wind catching a dress, laughing while walking together, leaning into each other naturally, movement, emotion, connection. That’s why flowy fabrics, layered textures, and clothing with movement tend to photograph so well. Trends come and go, but emotion always feels timeless.
I also tell couples that professional hair and makeup can absolutely be worth considering if it helps you feel more confident. Not because you need to look different, but because professional makeup tends to photograph more evenly on camera, especially during golden hour and sunset lighting. Minneapolis weather can also change quickly, so planning ahead always helps.
At the end of the day, your engagement photos should feel like your relationship. Not Pinterest. Not a trend. Not overly posed. The best photos happen when couples stop worrying about performing and simply settle into being together.
That’s always my goal during engagement sessions as a Minneapolis Engagement Photographer — creating photos that feel honest, cinematic, emotional, and actually representative of who you are together.
Your engagement session shouldn’t feel stressful. It should feel like a really good evening together with a little direction along the way.
If you’re planning engagement photos and looking for a Minneapolis Wedding Photographer or Minneapolis Engagement Photographer who blends candid storytelling with an editorial approach, I’d love to connect. The best photos usually happen somewhere between the planned moments and the unexpected ones.
